Hysterangium crassirhachis generally has a lighter-colored gleba than H. separabile, but this
can vary depending on the maturity of the specimen. Technically, the difference between the two
is microscopic: H. separabile has inflated cells in its peridium and H. crassirhachis does not.
Unfortunately, this characteristic is not particularly helpful in the field...
