Hymenogaster gilkeyae is another malodorous squishy brown truffle. This
in no way
reflects on its namesake, Dr. Helen Gilkey. Dr. Gilkey was the first woman
to receive
a doctorate in botany from the University
of California at Berkeley. She studied
botany at Oregon Agricultural College (now OSU) from 1918 to
1972 specializing in
ascomycete truffles. She was also a talented botanical artist and provided many of the
illustrations for Peck's "Manual of the Higher Plants of Oregon."
