This is a close-up of the tip of a western hemlock root
colonized by the mycorrhizae
of Craterellus tubaeformis (winter chanterelle). The
fungus not only sheaths the
entire root tip but also infiltrates the root cells, where nutrient
exchange occurs. The
fuzz you can see emanating from the root are some of the fine fungal
hyphae that probe
the soil for water and nutrients.
